About Jim Corbett National Park

Nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas in Uttarakhand, Jim Corbett National Park is India’s oldest national park and a crown jewel for wildlife conservation. Spanning over 520 square kilometers, the park is a haven for biodiversity and a paradise for wildlife lovers, photographers, and nature seekers. Established in 1936 as Hailey National Park and renamed in honor of legendary hunter-turned-conservationist Jim Corbett, the park is a pioneering effort in India’s Project Tiger initiative.

Geography & Landscape

The park features a stunning mosaic of terrains — dense Sal forests, riverine belts, rolling grasslands, and hilly terrains. The Ramganga River flows through its heart, providing lifeline to the park's ecosystem. The changing altitude ranging from 400m to 1,200m above sea level creates varied microclimates, supporting rich diversity of flora and fauna.

Flora of Corbett

The park is richly forested with over 600 species of plants and trees. Sal, Khair, Haldu, Peepal, and Rohini dominate the forest canopy. The grasslands, or chaurs, are crucial grazing grounds for herbivores. The mix of riverine vegetation and deciduous forest makes Corbett a botanical treasure trove. During spring and monsoon, the park blooms with wildflowers and fresh greenery.

Fauna of Corbett

Jim Corbett is best known for being home to the majestic Royal Bengal Tiger. Apart from tigers, the park harbors over 50 species of mammals including elephants, leopards, sloth bears, wild boars, jackals, and langurs. Its marshy areas and water bodies are inhabited by crocodiles, turtles, otters, and several fish species. Corbett is also a birdwatcher’s delight, with over 650 bird species recorded — from Great Hornbills and crested serpent eagles to migratory waterfowl and vultures.

Safari Zones & Forest Rest Houses

The park is divided into various tourism zones: Dhikala, Bijrani, Jhirna, Dhela, Garjiya, and Durga Devi. Each zone offers unique terrain and wildlife experience. Dhikala is the largest and most popular, offering night stays at Forest Rest Houses inside the core area — a rare chance to stay within tiger territory. Safari bookings can be done online or through authorized agents. Both jeep safaris and canter safaris are available.

Best Time to Visit

The park is open from mid-November to mid-June. The winter months (November to February) are perfect for birdwatching and tiger sightings. Summer (March to June) increases the chances of seeing wildlife around water sources. The monsoon months (July–October) are restricted due to heavy rains and park closure, though some buffer zones like Jhirna remain open.

Conservation Efforts

Jim Corbett National Park is not only a tourism destination but also a vital site for conservation. Project Tiger, launched in 1973, started right here, highlighting the area’s critical role in preserving India's natural heritage. Conservation activities include anti-poaching patrols, habitat improvement, community awareness, and scientific monitoring of tiger populations.
